General Technical Experience :

A significant part of Ernest Smith’s professional career was spent at the JPS as an Engineering Manager. Some of his notable achievements during that period include:

1. Chief Engineer – Substations at JPS - Project Manager for the design & construction of new JPS Substations Island wide between 1989-1996, total value - US$11 M.

2. Director Engineering

a. Chairman Steering Committee for replacement of old SCADA system for the T&D Network; and the transition of the JPS internal communications system from Analog to Digital.

b. Team Leader – T & D system improvement projects focused on the elimination of “Flashing”¹ and, the reduction of the impact of Lightning.

c. Team Leader – reengineering of distribution line maintenance process

Flashing¹ – term used to describe the phenomenon of flashover (fault interruption due to contaminated insulators) on power transmission and distribution lines
